You’ve probably heard about the International Space Station, the largest human-made structure in space, but did you know that humans are now racing to build permanent structures on the moon and other planets like Mars, as we work toward becoming a multiplanetary species? These new space bases will be semi-permanent outposts for long-term human habitation. Uncrewed robotic rovers and cargo deliveries are planned to prepare the surface. Have you heard about the prime real estate available at the lunar south pole? Chosen because its deep craters hold water ice, which can be converted to rocket fuel and drinking water, and its high ridges receive near-constant sunlight.
Astronauts may use metal and inflatable habitats protected by 3D-printed “lunar bricks” to block radiation. Power will be generated by both solar and potentially nuclear fission systems. The high cost of space travel leaves no room for waste — sustainability and net zero design are required, not optional. Developing space architecture creates a positive feedback loop for terrestrial Earth architecture as well, as we bring space learnings back to our home planet.
