Matt Roberts

Postdoctoral Researcher, Center for the Built Environment - UC Berkeley
Matt Roberts leads life cycle assessment (LCA) and embodied carbon research at the Center for the Built Environment at UC Berkeley. Matt’s research efforts focus on advancing LCA methodology and applying LCA to complex issues within the built environment. Current research focuses on expanding the scope of building elements and life cycle stages considered within building-scale LCAs, the role of carbon offsets within net-zero carbon claims, and improving industry knowledge surrounding low-impact design strategies. He received his PhD in Architecture and Civil Engineering, and a MSc in Conservation of Historic Buildings from the University of Bath, UK and BASc in Civil Engineering and International Studies in Engineering from the University of Waterloo, Canada. Past research has focused on design-for-disassembly, bio-based building materials, circular economy, on-site energy storage and on-site energy generation, among other applications of LCA within the built environment.
