Ben Loescher is a founding Principal at Loescher Meachem Architects where his work focuses on the reuse of existing buildings, high-performance workplace design for the film, television, and media industries, and innovation in earthen construction. In 2009, he created Adobeisnotsoftware, the firm's advocacy arm that works to inform, enable, and advance adobe construction in California. The firm has recently designed and permitted California’s first two adobe homes, and first compressed earth block home under the International Building Code. Loescher’s work to appropriately reform earthen masonry building regulation has resulted in the overturning of an industry-led proposal to remove adobe from the building code, as well as the establishment of The Masonry Society’s Earthen Modular Masonry Committee which has been charged with establishing a new national standard for the use of adobe and compressed earth block. Loescher was the Chair of the Earthbuilders’ Guild, the U.S. trade association for earthen construction from 2016-2023, and currently serves on the board of Adobe in Action, a New Mexico-based non-profit focused on assisting individuals in building their own earthen housing.
