A Letter From Drew Shula, Verdical Group’s Founder & CEO

Be forcefully anti fossil fuels. If I could leave you with one takeaway from this year’s Net Zero Conference it’d be that. Fossil fuels (natural gas AKA methane gas, oil, coal) are by far the biggest carbon emitters and contributors to the climate crisis, and in order to solve it, we need fossil fuel companies to die as quickly as possible. Stop accepting money from fossil fuel companies (Verdical Group did this 3 years ago). If you’re taking money from fossil fuel companies who want to hire you, you aren’t helping them be better; you’re helping them green wash and confuse people with your own good name. Taking money from fossil fuel companies makes you one of them and part of the problem. Don’t trick yourself into thinking fossil fuel companies are trying to do the right thing — they’re fighting legislation and doing everything in their power to maintain the status quo. When you were a kid, did you ever think you’d grow up to become a “sell out”? I hope not. Stop selling out and work to be the change you want to see in the world.

Greta Thunberg said it best (5 years ago in 2018 at the age of 15!), “The climate crisis has already been solved. We already have all the facts and solutions. All we need to do is to wake up and change.” We have excellent books like Paul Hawken’s “Drawdown,” and “Regeneration,” and John Doerr’s “Speed & Scale,” that organize the global scope of the problem, and provide structure and clarity on what an actionable response looks like across economic sectors. So all we’re really facing is an education problem, and that’s where all of YOU come in!

The Net Zero Conference is where climate leaders and creators convene to share climate optimism success stories about what’s working. We all come away with more knowledge to share with others, because we’re all climate influencers and science educators with our families, friends and colleagues. You don’t need a huge social media following like some of this year’s speakers (Isaias Hernandez, Wawa Gatheru, and Intersectional Environmentalist – please check these folks out!), you can influence a few people in your life, or many, but every new person who “gets it” becomes part of the ever-growing tide of change sweeping across the globe, reinventing and rebuilding our zero carbon economy of the future.

I’m a climate optimist. I know we’ll get there. It’s just a matter of how quickly. I hope you had an incredible Net Zero Conference experience, and bring someone with you when you come back next year!

Thank you to all of this year’s keynotes, speakers, sponsors, partners, attendees, Abstract Review Committee members, Trailblazer Award winners, volunteers – our entire Net Zero Conference community!
